Castles in Slovakia

6-days trip

Arrival – (Košice-Krakow-Budapest)

1st day – short guide to  Zborov Castle, Rakoczi II wedding place.  In the 18th-19th century some of uprisings on Habsburg dynasty were conspired right here. The castle is located near Bardejov.

Overnight in Bardejov

2nd day – Spiš Castle – one of the largest castles in Europe, the former seat of kings. After light short tour of the complex we move to Orava with beautiful nature and there we visit one of the most preserved castles in Slovakia – Orava Castle.  The castle rises on limestone cliff over 112 meters above the River Orava.  The tour takes about two hours.

Overnight in Dolný Kubín

3rd day – Trenčín Castle- after little longer transfer we get to the city of Trenčín. The dominant feature over the city is Trenčín Castle, in the Middle Ages guarded the ancient trade route, later it became the seat of the Lord of Danube and  Tatras, Matus Cak of Trencin, and eventually became a witness of Turkish invasion.

On a nearby rock we look at the only preserved unique inscription on the castle rock from Roman times.

Overnight in Trenčín

4th day – Bratislava Castle- an old castle built in the 9th century, today very nicely renovated with magnificent exhibitions of Slovak history. The castle is located in the city center and dominates towering over the Danube River. From the courtyard we have a beautiful view of the river, part of Bratislava and in a good weather up to Austria. In the afternoon we board a small river boat and treat ourselves with a trip to Devin Castle. The oldest documented castle in Slovakia majestically towering above the confluence of the Danube and Moravia. We will talk a little bit about rich history of the castle and the period when our nationalists met here.

Overnight in Bratislava

5th day – Červený Kameň Castle – on the slopes of the Little Carpathians is one of the best preserved castles. Turzo, Palffy and especially Fugger, rich aristocratic dynasty who contributed to rebuilding this castle residence. Today, we find here the richest residential and architectural preview of life of elderly nobility. We move to Nitra – the old headquarters of the Great Moravia.

6th day – Muráň Castle – the third highest castle in Slovakia, where lived a beautiful lady called Muráň Venus. Coburgs lived in the castle until 1945. Move south for one of the most beautiful castles in Slovakia – Krásna Hôrka Castle. Two prominent families Mariassy and especially Andrassy left us castle magnificently standing on massive rocks. Here we find examples of rural life of our aristocracy, unique exhibits from the privacy of the wealthy but also medieval weapons.
